本片讲述了1937年卢沟桥事变后，日军侵华战争全面展开，日本侵略者对中国丰富的战略资源进行大肆掠夺，煤矿资源则被侵略者作为掠夺重点，施行“以人换煤”的血腥政策三晋大地，战火纷飞，硝烟四起……宅心仁厚的爱国乡绅王孝儒与矿工、乡亲们共同经营着一口煤窑，开办窑工学校的儿子王少杰与青梅竹马的秋红两情相悦……直到有一天，日本侵略者罪恶的枪声打破了这宁静的生活，王孝儒的父亲被日本人杀害。王孝儒为了保护乡亲们的生命被迫答应了日本鬼子煤矿恢复生产的要求，而他的忍辱负重并不被乡亲们理解，背负了“汉奸”的骂名。王孝儒一直暗中支持着游击队打击日本鬼子的斗争，直到石榴的死，让王孝儒认识到和豺狼虎豹没有道理可讲，终于设计与日本侵略者同归于尽。
